What Happened In Katete?

The incident happened on 19 November 2022 in Kamwaza Village, 35 km south of Katete town. According to the initial investigations by Police, the Headman protected two suspects.

Those men allegedly were involved in the suspected murder of a man identified as Kusenseyo in the Chieftainess Kawaza area on 6 October 2022.

One of the public members caught the alleged men and turned them over to the authorities. However, due to a lack of evidence, Police released them on 14 November, says Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale.

This enraged several village members, who resorted to damaging the House of the Headman and the suspects. Some people also accused the Headman of practicing witchcraft.

Following a report of malicious property damage, nine Police officers hurried to the area where villagers had destroyed six homes and a car that belonged to the Headman and suspects.

When the officers were leaving the village, an uncompromising mob blocked the road with logs and began throwing rocks and sticks at them, resulting in the severe injury of nine officers.

In addition, a Police car was also set on Fire. According to Mr. Mwale, Police officers were armed at the time of the incident. However, they refrained from using weapons on the locals.
