Tuesday saw the announcement of Miranda’s passing by his husband, the American Journalist and lawyer Glenn Greenwald, with whom he raised their two adopted kids, Joo and Jonathan.
Miranda was also a columnist for the Guardian U.S. Tomorrow, he would have turned 38, Greenwald tweeted. He passed away peacefully in the Company of our children, relatives, and friends.
Miranda spent nine months in critical care after being hospitalized in August last year with a severe stomach ailment. She passed away early on Tuesday.
“Today Brazil lost a courageous young man who, in fighting for his dreams, ended up untying the dreams of many others too,” tweeted Emicida, one of the most well-known rappers in that country.
Rosângela Lula da Silva, the first lady of Brazil, said Miranda left a legacy “of struggle and love.”
According to a tweet from Gleisi Hoffmann, the Leader of Lula’s Workers Party (P.T.), “He had a vivacity which brought joy to politics.”

Mr. Greenwald described his late husband’s life as “extraordinary in all aspects,” describing the former lawmaker.
He was adopted by a neighbor in Rio de Janeiro’s Jacarezinho favela after becoming orphaned at five.
According to Mr. Greenwald, Mr. Miranda later in life had a “central role” in reporting on Edward Snowden’s discoveries while working as a contractor for the U.S. National Security Agency.
Following the Pulitzer Prize-winning articles from 2013, Mr. Miranda was held in custody for nine hours under the Terrorism Act at London’s Heathrow Airport.
After meeting with filmmaker Laura Poitras, who was involved in releasing disclosures based on the papers revealed by Mr. Snowden, he was halted while en route from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro.
Last year, Mr. Greenwald decided to drop Mr. Miranda’s reelection Campaign due to his husband’s health.
Glenn Greenwald and his family received a tweet from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressing his sorrow.
He was “a young man with an extraordinary career, who left too soon,” Lula wrote.
