Alexei Popyrin’s current coach is former Belgian star and world top-20 player Xavier Malisse.

After a rough 2022, Popyrin said he was glad to see his hard work paying off under the new coach. 

Popyrin said on the court after the match that after a tough season last year, it was good to come out and beat a high-quality player. He added that it showed that his work in the off-season was “paying off already.”

He also shared that Malisse was improving his consistency, saying, “We started in October, and he has been a great addition to my team.”

Popyrin appreciated his coach’s work. “I have got the big serve, got the big forehand, but I want to be more consistent,” he admitted.

Alexei Popyrin was born in Sydney, Australia, to his Russian parents, Alex and Elena. They immigrated to Australia before Alexei was born.  

Alexei is multilingual and can speak Russian and Spanish in addition to English.

The tennis pro has two sisters, Sonia and Anna, and a younger brother, Anthony. With the latter, he served as a ball boy at the 2009 Dubai Tennis Championships. 

The family often moved, primarily due to Alex’s work. They moved to Dubai when Alexei was eight and to Alicante, Spain, when he was 11. Alex de Minaur was his neighbor in the latter.

His father, Alex, co-founded the Ultimate Tennis Showdown with Patrick Mouratoglou during the 2020 Coronavirus shutdown.

Likewise, his mother, Elena, is also a big inspiration to Alexei. “I don’t remember the last time she missed a training session or a match,” he told ABC in 2017

“The sacrifices she made are why I am where I am right now. I am so grateful for everything she has done for me,” Alexei added.

Due to his immense passion and supportive family, Alexei started playing tennis aged four. He attended Kim Warwick Tennis Academy in Hornsby.

He was in attendance for the memorable 2008 Australian Open third-round match between Marcos Baghdatis and Lleyton Hewitt.

Regarding his marital status, Alexei is unmarried but dating his girlfriend, Amy Pederick, a student in London studying Physiotherapy.
