In a plenary meeting on Thursday, Cozzolino and Tarabella’s immunity was waived, allowing Belgian investigators to detain them.

The Belgian police also carried out fresh raids on Friday about Tarabella and Cozzolino.

The spokesperson for the Belgian prosecutor confirmed that earlier on Friday, Belgian police searched Cozzolino’s home in Brussels and sealed, but did not search, his office in the European Parliament.

The prosecutor stated in a press statement that many offices in the Walloon municipality of Anthisnes, where Tarabella is still mayor, and a safe deposit box owned by Tarabella at a bank in Liège were also searched.

According to legislative findings, Tarabella and Cozzolino may have broken Belgian law by engaging in corruption, belonging to a criminal group, or money laundering.

However, the prosecutor’s services only highlighted corruption and money laundering in its communication on Friday.

Late last week, Niccol Figà-Talamanca, the secretary-general of No Peace Without Justice, one of the nongovernmental organizations connected to the Qatargate corruption scandal, was one of the four initial detainees in the case and was freed from prison by the Belgian investigative judge overseeing the case.

Former vice president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili, her partner Francesco Giorgi, and former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri are the other three suspects currently being held. Panzeri agreed to work with the investigators in January.

Cozzolino and Tarabella both reject any wrongdoing.
