Arion Kurtaj, a name now synonymous with high-profile cybercrimes, spent his formative years living with his mother and younger brother in Oxfordshire.
However, there is limited information about his family members, including their names, and profession. According to reports, Kurtaj’s childhood was marked by challenges and serious health issues.
Arion’s complex health diagnoses, including autism and ADHD, meant he functioned at the level of just 1% of his peers, according to his childhood doctor, Nicholas Hindley.
Hindley characterized Kurtaj as “a particularly impaired individual.”
He added that the young man was initially brought to his attention when the special needs school he was attending could not manage him.
Arion Kurtaj Physically Assaulted His Mother In The Past
Arion Kurtaj’s formal education ended in his early teens. He had a brief stint in social care after he physically assaulted his mother.
While the specific details of this incident are not known, it has been reported that he was taken into social care for assaulting his mom.
This period ended abruptly when Kurtaj was attacked by a staff member, leading to his mother taking him back into her care.
Oversight of Kurtaj’s computer use proved challenging for his mother. Claudia Camden-Smith, the doctor responsible for his adult care, noted that hacking gave him a sense of “street cred.”
The doctor added that Kurtaj yearned to fit in, to be seen as “trendy and risky,” much like his peers.
Camden-Smith continued, “Yet his vulnerability, which was a major factor in his life and actions, is not fully captured by his diagnosis.”
Where Is Arion Kurtaj Now?
Arion Kurtaj, a key member of the notorious Lapsus$ cybercrime group, was recently sentenced to an indefinite hospital detention.
Additionally, Kurtaj had been violent in detention, according to several accounts of injuries and property damage presented to the court.
Due to his severe autism, doctors determined that the Oxfordshire native was not fit to stand trial.
The jury was tasked with determining if Arion carried out the alleged crimes, not whether he did so with criminal intent.
Furthermore, he “continued to express the intent to return to cyber-crime as soon as possible,” according to a mental health exam that was presented in the sentencing trial. The reports revealed he is also highly motivated.
Arion Kurtaj was given a juvenile rehabilitation order at Surrey’s Guildford Crown Court on Thursday.
The teenager will be subject to an 18-month supervision requirement, a 6-month rehabilitation requirement, a 3-month intense supervision requirement, and other requirements as part of the order.
