Markus Duesmann was born in Heek, North Rhine-Westphalia, on June 23, 1969.
The departing Audi CEO earned an engineering degree in 1991 after completing his mechanical engineering studies at Muenster University of Applied Sciences.
In 1992, Mr. Duesmann joined at Mercedes-Benz firm in Stuttgart as a design engineer for a V12 series-production engine.
He relocated to the Aachen, Germany-based development service provider FEV GmbH in 1995, where he worked in several capacities, the last of which was head of the engine mechanics division.
He was appointed chief department manager for new diesel engines at DaimlerChrysler AG in Stuttgart in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed head of Formula 1 development at Mercedes-Benz in Brixworth, England.
