Baba Maharaj Satarkar was married to Rukmini Satarkar, popularly known as Mai Satarkar, who was also a kirtankar and a singer.
She accompanied him in many of his kirtans and also performed solo. She had a melodious voice and a deep knowledge of the Varakari literature.
She sang abhangs, bhajans, bhavgeets and natyageets with devotion and grace. She also composed some songs of her own. She passed away on February 5, 2023, at the age of 86.
Baba Maharaj Satarkar and Mai Satarkar had four children: two sons and two daughters. Their eldest son is Dr. Shrikant Satarkar, who is a doctor and a kirtankar.
He runs a hospital in Pune and performs kirtans with his wife, Dr. Shubhada Satarkar, a doctor and singer.

Baba Maharaj Satarkar belonged to the Gondhali caste, which is a nomadic community of musicians and singers in Maharashtra.
His original name was Nilkanth Dnyaneshwar Gore. He was born on February 5, 1936 in Satara district of Maharashtra.
His father was Jnaneshwar Dada Gore, an expert mrudang player; his mother was Lakshmibai Jnaneshwar Gore, who was fond of the Varakari literature.
His family had a 135-year tradition of performing Varakari kirtans. Baba Maharaj Satarkar started learning kirtans from his father at the age of eight.
He also learned classical music from Purushottam Bua Agra Gharana, Latafat Hussain Khan Saheb and others. He completed his education till S.S.C. in English medium.
He also studied law for some time but later gave it up to pursue his passion for kirtans.

He adopted the name Baba Maharaj Satarkar after he became the disciple of Shri Sadguru Dadamaharaj Satarkar, who was a saintly figure in the Varakari Sampradaya.
