There is no truth to a video claiming that Babu Owino, a member of parliament for Embakasi East, was detained on Wednesday at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
As news of the MP’s detention spread, the video quickly gained popularity on social media. Citizen Digital, however, has acknowledged that it is an old video that was shot on September 27, 2017.
The event occurred in the Milimani Law Courts, where Babu Owino was charged with subversion, offensive behavior, and a different charge of inciting violence.
Shortly after a Nairobi magistrate court released Babu Owino on the mentioned date, police detained him again.

Then, according to police, Babu was again detained in relation to an assault offense he committed earlier whilst running for chairman of the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).
However, on Wednesday morning, the MP announced on his Facebook page that he had been taken into custody.
“After I arrived from Mombasa, the DCI JKIA arrested me. Presently detained,” he wrote. The MP was afterward contacted by Citizen Digital for a remark, however, a call to his phone was unsuccessful.
The claimed detention is related to upcoming anti-government demonstrations authorized by the Azimio la Umoja alliance.

Owino was charged in September 2021 with intimidating journalists and making threatening phone calls and text messages.
According to multiple Kenyan media outlets, Owino was detained in September 2017 for insulting Kenyan President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.
Many political heavyweights in Kenya demanded that he face severe legal repercussions for violating his right to free speech by making overtly derogatory statements about the president.
In Nairobi, he was detained and accused of using hate speech. Owino has often been accused of attacking a number of people in Kenya, including other lawmakers, parking attendants, night guards, and many more.

Videos of him openly and violently accosting people who disagree with him about anything were published by the media in some of the situations.
Owino was detained and accused of assault and serious bodily harm in September 2017 on a voter.
Owino was detained in January 2018 for reportedly attacking a parking attendant in Westlands, Nairobi, along with one of his helpers over a dispute about unpaid parking.
Despite a video showing the parking valet being assaulted, Owino disputed the accusations.
