Huw Edwards was raised in Llangennech, close to Llanelli, starting at four. He was born on August 18, 1961, in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales, into a Welsh-speaking family.
His father, Hywel Teifi Edwards, was a research professor of Welsh-language literature at University College, Swansea, and a Plaid Cymru and Welsh language activist.
He was also an author and academic. Aerona Protheroe, Edwards’ mother, spent 30 years teaching at Ysgol Gyfun y Strade in Llanelli. Meinir is his only sister.
After attending Llanelli Boys’ Grammar School, he attended University College, Cardiff, earning a first-class honors degree in French in 1983.
After receiving his first degree, he began postgraduate study in medieval French at Cardiff University before working as a reporter for the local radio station Swansea Sound and later joined the BBC.
