It has been 23 years, but Cherie Westell’s missing case remains unsolved, and the $ 1 million reward offer for any tip that led to a conviction is still unclaimed.
Despite the passage of time, the case of her disappearance remains shrouded in mystery, with no concrete leads on her whereabouts.
Cherie Westell was a few days away from celebrating her 16th birthday at the time of her disappearance.
The heart-wrenching story of Cherie Westell’s disappearance dates back to December 12, 2000.
On that fateful day, the 15-year-old was dropped off at a dental surgery in Melbourne, seemingly like any other ordinary afternoon.
However, the course of her life took a dark turn when she vanished without a trace.
The last contact with Cherie was a phone call she made from a public phone box, informing a family member that she would be catching a train home to Ringwood. Those words would be the last anyone heard from her.
Her family, friends, and the entire community were left in a state of shock and despair as the days turned into weeks and weeks into years, with no sign of Cherie.
Police Believe That Cherie Westell Is Likely Died
Police suspect that Cherie Westell is likely dead, as a coroner concluded in 2003 that someone probably killed her.
To find the culprit, Victoria Police offered a reward of up to $1 million in December 2022 for anyone who can help them get a conviction.
Cherie was a state ward, so her missing case report was delayed for six days until a biological relative reported it.
Frances, who used to be Cherie’s foster mother, wanted to alert the police immediately, but they refused to take her report.
“Her case is a nightmare for any family,” said Tony Combridge, the Detective Acting Inspector of the Missing Persons Squad at Victoria Police.
“Cherie was a young girl who phoned her family to say she was coming home, and that was the last time they ever heard from her,” he said.
The people who took Cherie away have been hiding this secret for more than two decades. “It’s a long time to be living in fear,” added Tony Combridge.
The authorities and the missing girl’s family requested the public to come forward and provide any information they have.
“It does not matter how insignificant and small you may think the piece of information is. The information could be exactly what our investigators need to make a breakthrough in this case,” said Tony Combridge.
