Before the Cup championship race on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where JGR’s Christopher Bell was vying for the title, NASCAR observed a moment of mourning for Coy Gibbs. After 15 years with the team, Kyle Busch was in his final race, and as the race was about to begin, he was sobbing on the pit road.

Coy Gibbs, the vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing for his NFL and NASCAR Hall of Fame Father, passed unexpectedly just a few hours after his son claimed the Xfinity Series championship Sunday morning. He was 49.

However, Ty Gibbs has come under Fire this season for his reckless driving, and last week, on the closing lap of the Martinsville Speedway race, he wrecked teammate Brandon Jones, knocking him out of the lead.

If Gibbs had just stayed in second place, JGR and Toyota would have had two cars in the championship race, which Jones needed to win to claim the Xfinity title.

During the race, Harvick, operating the #6 truck he owned, made contact with Gibbs, who was driving the #18 truck for his Father’s team.

After a restart, Harvick reacted by purposefully damaging Gibbs, which caused the #6 to be parked for the remainder of the race. Despite Harvick’s denials, radio transmissions showed that his actions were deliberate.

Since Harvick was already on probation for fighting with Greg Biffle following the Busch Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway two weeks prior, the incident with Gibbs led to Harvick’s suspension.
