Kato suffered severe head, chest, and neck injuries after he crashed hard during the Japanese Grand Prix on April 6, 2003, the opening MotoGP race of the year. At about 125 mph (200 km/h), he struck the wall close to the Casio Triangle chicane on the circuit.
According to the Accident Investigation Committee, Kato lost control of his motorcycle, which went into a close-to-high-side state and then into an uncontrollable oscillation weave, which caused him to leave the track and hit the barrier.
