Chris Vaughn, a Cowboys scout, was captured on camera at the team’s draft offices breaking down in tears of delight when informed by his coworkers that they were about to choose his son with the No. 212 overall choice.

The call was a long time coming for the running back, who spent just three seasons with the Wildcats but is already K-State’s second-leading career rusher. However, it has always been that way throughout his football career.

Deuce was selected by the Cowboys, making him the fourth player from K-State in the draft since 2003.

Christopher, Deuce’s father, was an assistant coach at Arkansas, Ole Miss, Memphis, and Texas before becoming a professional scout for the Dallas Cowboys.

Deuce’s father was a Murray State player before switching to coaching, serving as an assistant at Arkansas, Ole Miss, Memphis, and Texas.

Marquette, Deuce’s mother, worked as an HCA Healthcare home health coordinator in the past. She served as Brookdale’s home health coordinator before joining HCA.

Deuce Vaughn Career Highlights

Despite his evident output, Deuce Vaughn, who is only 5-foot-5 and 179 pounds, has had to establish himself at every level, from high school to college to the pros.

Scouts had a hard time seeing past his stature, though. But the running back never gave a thought to the draft number that appeared next to his name.

Vaughn will play near his Round Rock, Texas, home, as will all his chosen former K-State teammates.

After graduating from Cedar Ridge High School, where he amassed 4,405 career rushing yards, Vaughn did not receive many offers from colleges.

Only K-State wanted him to be an every-down running back out of the Power Five schools that were interested in him.

The Wildcats had instant satisfaction when true freshman running back Vaughn carried for 642 yards and seven touchdowns.

After being named All-America as a freshman, Deuce improved as a junior with 1,404 running yards, a team-high 49 receptions for 468 yards, and 22 touchdowns overall.

Vaughn received second-team All-Conference honors and was voted the Big 12 Conference’s Offensive Freshman of the Year. The athlete began his second season on the Doak Walker Award shortlist.
