How Did American Sports Commentator Dave Wills Die?
On Sunday, there was some depressing Tampa Bay Rays news.
The group revealed that 58-year-old radio play-by-play announcer Dave Wills, who had worked for the Company since 2005, has passed away.
As a result, the Rays decided to hold a pre-game minute of silence for Wills and canceled the day’s scheduled radio broadcast from spring training.
According to that previous article by Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times, Wills was admitted to a hospital in Toronto toward the end of the 2022 Campaign and missed the final two weeks of that regular season due to a heart condition.
Still, he later returned for the playoffs and this year’s spring training (where he called Saturday’s game).
Rays Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg remarked, “David was a terrific announcer, a great friend, and an even better person.
“He was an essential member of the Rays family and had a tremendous ability to make the game come alive for our fans.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this terrible time. We shall miss him deeply.
Early Life of Dave Wills
Wills started his on-air broadcasting career in the Chicago media market by covering sports for radio stations WMAQ and WMVP.
From 1991 until 1995, he worked as the radio voice for the Class-A Kane County Cougars, where he held his first play-by-play role.
Wills covered John Rooney’s pre- and post-game segments on the Chicago White Sox radio broadcasts from 1997 to 2004.
He also co-hosted a daily sports talk radio show at that time, hosted a local cable television sports show, hosted the pre-and post-game Notre Dame football and basketball radio broadcasts, and provided radio play-by-play for the basketball team of University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
Before the 2005 season, the Rays signed Wills and Andy Freed to replace the club’s original radio duo, which included Paul Olden and Charlie Slowes.
Wills was honored by the Irish-American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
