The couple divorced 15 years later in 1972 when David found Beryl cheating on him with his best friend in his swimming pool. It happened on the same day David caught his Father stealing his shares.

David played youth team football for West Ham, where he was offered forms to sign as an apprentice professional for the first team, which his dad declined to countersign.
