Denys Monastyrsky, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, is killed in a helicopter crash at a kindergarten in Kyiv.

Eighteen people have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed in a kindergarten in an eastern suburb of Kyiv.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, as the helicopter crashed in the kindergarten and another building.

A total of 29 people were hurt due to the crash, including ten children, and 15 were treated in nearby hospitals.

Most of the casualties were not traveling in the helicopter. However, the debris of the crash hit them.

Among the dead are three children and Ukraine’s Interior minister, Denys Monastyrsky.

The official said Monastyrsky’s first deputy minister, Yevhen Yenin, and the state secretary, Yurii Lubkovich, also died in the accident.

The helicopter, which came down in Brovary, belonged to the Ukrainian state emergency service, according to National police chief Ihor Klymenko.

Following the crash, a fire broke out, and children and staff were immediately moved from the building.

The weather in Kyiv at the time of the accident is reported to be dark and foggy, which may be the reason for the crash.

Initial reports suggest that the helicopter first hit the kindergarten and crashed into a residential building.

Remembering Denys Monastyrsky- Looking Back At His Career

Denys Anatoliiovych Monastyrsky was born in Khmelnytskyi in Soviet Union on June 12, 1980.

He studied at the Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law and graduated with a degree in Law.

Anatoliiovych holds a Ph.D. in Law and started his career in 2007 as a lawyer.

He was an associate professor and the head of the department of lawmaking at the Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law.

Moreover, Denys was a co-founder and a board member of “Into the Future through Culture,” a Podolia Youth Cultural Association.

Monastyrsky came to the limelight as an expert in Volodymyr Zelensky’s team on law enforcement reform in the run-up to the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election.

Zelensky won the presidential election and was coronated as the President of Ukraine on May 20, 2019.

Denys Monastyrsky was a Servant of the People party candidate in the 2019 parliamentary election and was subsequently elected to the parliament.

The 42-year-old was the head of the Committee on Law Enforcement Affairs in the Ukrainian parliament. 

Monastyrsky was appointed the Minister of Internal Affairs on July 16, 2021, after Arsen Avakov resigned as the Interior Minister on July 12, 2021.

Denys Monastrysky was considered one of the fierce leaders in the Ukrainian political world. Sadly, he passed away on January 18, 2023, aged 42.

Monastyrsky’s deputy, Yevhen Yenin, also died in the helicopter crash aged 42. State secretary Yurii Lubkovich also passed away.
