Derrick Lewis Illness And Health Update

After Derrick Lewis was forced to withdraw from the UFC Fight Night 215 main event, his health was deemed suitable.

During the middle of Saturday’s card, UFC officials said Lewis (26-10 MMA, 17-8 UFC) had become ill and would not be able to face Serghei Spivac (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas as scheduled.

Following the news, little was known about Lewis’ condition, but Dr. Jeff Davidson, a physician for the UFC, revealed to MMA Junkie that “The Black Beast” had been admitted to the hospital with a stomach problem.

 

According to Dr. Davidson, Lewis was subsequently found to be clean of the problems and has been discharged from the hospital.

The promotion’s plans for Lewis are currently unknown, as well as whether or not the fight with Spivac will be rescheduled.

When Lewis eventually left the hospital, he continued to compete. Lewis was dropped from the bill after the main event had to be canceled by UFC officials. The broadcast crew for UFC Vegas 65 made the declaration official.

Early Life Of Derrick Lewis

Lewis was the second oldest of seven children raised by a single mother in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child, he struggled and frequently engaged in street fighting.

Lewis and his family moved to Houston, Texas, in 1998. Lewis started boxing training at 17 and was getting ready for his first amateur match when the gym abruptly closed.

Lewis was put on probation and charged with aggravated assault two weeks after receiving his high school diploma.

Lewis broke his probation two years later while enrolled in Kilgore College on a full football scholarship. He was given a five-year prison sentence but only served three and a half of them.

Lewis studied boxing under the instruction of George Foreman while working as a tow truck driver a week after being freed.

He was also exposed to mixed martial arts by a buddy. Lewis decided to concentrate on mixed martial arts after dominating his first professional match.
