On the evening of January 10, 1996, Diao and her dormitory roommate were punished for using an electrical appliance illegally. 

Following a conflict with the dormitory management, she left the building and did not return. Diao was last seen wearing a red coat with a black lining, and the authorities did not inform her family until January 19, when she was reported missing. 

The discovery of Diao’s remains was first reported by a sanitary worker in January, who found meat in a bag that was initially thought to be pork.

Human remains were eventually discovered across eight locations around the University, including a stadium, entrance gate, hospital, and roadsides, and Police confirmed they belonged to Diao.

A photograph of the autopsy report of Diao Aiqing was posted on Reddit. 

The photo showed the victim’s dismembered body and caused widespread outrage and controversy. The photograph sparked a heated debate about whether the authorities should have released the photograph to the public. 

Some argued that it was necessary to release the photograph to raise awareness about the horrific nature of the crime and to bring attention to the unsolved case. Others believed the photograph was too graphic and disrespectful to the victim and her family.

The photograph’s release also renewed interest in the case, with many netizens urging the authorities to re-investigate the case and bring the perpetrator to justice.

Diao Aiqing ****** Case Ongoing Investigation

The investigation focused on students and teachers, with two suspect profiles including a single, middle-aged, physically fit male.

However, no one was found who matched the characteristics of the profiles. No significant leads were found despite a major investigation, and the case remains under investigation as of 2016, according to the Nanjing Police.

The case of Diao’s ****** is ongoing, and the Police are actively investigating the matter. The Nanjing Police have clarified that they are committed to solving the case and will continue to consider any logical analysis and conjecture that can help with the investigation.

In 2021, Diao’s family took legal action against Nanjing University, seeking damages for 1.6 million yuan (US$246,000). The lawsuit’s purpose was not to obtain financial compensation but to seek justice for Diao’s ******.
