How Did Sheffield Wednesday Legend Don Megson Die?

The legendary Sheffield Wednesday footballer had his last breath today at 86.

His family member has not disclosed the cause of his death, but Don’s son Gary reported that his father died peacefully.

Donald Harry Megson, also known as Don Megson, was an English footballer and manager.

He was born on November 12, 1937, in Sheffield, England, and began his football career as a defender for Sheffield Wednesday in 1955.

He played for Sheffield Wednesday for over a decade, making 363 appearances and scoring 15 goals. He was known for his tough tackling and no-nonsense style of play.

In 1967, Megson moved to Plymouth Argyle, where he played for one season before retiring from professional football.

After retiring from playing, Megson moved into coaching and management, beginning his managerial career at Shrewsbury Town in 1972.

He managed several other clubs, including Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, West Bromwich Albion, and Bristol Rovers.

As a manager, Don was known for his emphasis on discipline and organization.

He led West Bromwich Albion to promotion to the Premier League in 2002 and was also in charge of the club when they reached the League Cup final in 1995.

Following the death of Don Megson, thousands of tributes have flooded social media, particularly, Sheffield Wednesday fans have shown their condolences after news of his passing.

“Our thoughts to go out to Don’s family and friends at this difficult time,” Sheffield Wednesday said in a statement. “RIP a true Sheffield Wednesday legend.”

Former Wednesday player and manager Chris Turner spoke highly of Megson, calling him a “great captain and leader.”

Alan Biggs, a journalist, remembered him as a fine player, inspiring leader, and true gentleman by posting the news of his passing on Twitter on behalf of the family.

Other Owls fans have also expressed their condolences, with many reminiscing about Megson’s impact on the club during his time there.

Don Megson, a former Sheffield Wednesday footballer and manager, spent 18 years at Hillsborough and made 442 appearances, scoring seven goals.

He was a key member of the Wednesday team throughout the 1960s and even captained the team during their FA Cup final appearance in 1966, in which they narrowly lost 3-2 to Everton.

Megson moved to Bristol Rovers in 1970 after a distinguished career at Wednesday, where he made 31 appearances before retiring two years later.

Megson later became the manager of Bristol Rovers for five years before resigning. He then took charge of Bournemouth in March 1983 but resigned after only six months in charge.

After his managerial career, he worked as a part-time scout for his son Gary at Norwich City, Stockport County, Blackpool, and West Bromwich Albion.
