Stephen Lawrence was a black British adolescent from Plumstead in southeast London who was killed on April 22, 1993, at 18, in a racially motivated attack while waiting for a bus on Well Hall Road, Eltham.

The incident gained notoriety and had an impact on the legislation, police procedure, and people’s perceptions of racism and the police.

Also, the murder resulted in the partial repeal of the prohibition on double jeopardy.

Six suspects were detained during the investigation, but no charges were brought against them. As a result, no one was found guilty following a private prosecution started by Lawrence’s family.
