The incident happened around 6:50 p.m. in the 6400 block of Rio Grande Care, near Lake Edinburg.
Leila Arias and Jaidy Alcala were riding an ATV that lost control and plunged into a canal. The UTV they were in was partially underwater, with the girls trapped inside.
Two other girls who were with them managed to escape and ran to a nearby house for help. They called 911 and the homeowner’s wife drove them to a hospital.
The deputies arrived at the scene and found the UTV on its side in the canal, in water about two to three feet deep.
The deputies pulled the girls out of the water and performed CPR. They were rushed to a medical facility by ambulance, but it was too late.
They were pronounced dead. The justice of the peace ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
