Elaine Chao was born to a sound family on March 26, 1953, in Da’an District, Taipei, Taiwan. Her parents, James S.C. Chao and Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, raised her.

She grew up along with her five siblings named, Angela Chao, Grace Chao, May Chao, Christine Chao, and Jeanette Chao.

At age 8, she, her two sisters, and their mother came to the U.S. on a 37-day freight ship journey.

Her dad had arrived in New York three years earlier after receiving a scholarship.

Not to mention, her mother, Ruth, was the matriarch of a Chinese-American philanthropic family. 

Likewise, her father, James, is the founder of the Foremost Group. Unfortunately, her mother passed away in 2007 after a seven-year battle with lymphoma.

Elaine Chao belongs to a mixed ethnicity. She is originally from Da’an District, Taipei, Taiwan and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen at the age of 19.

Later, she went to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley and earned an Economics Bachelor of Arts degree.

After studying at Harvard Business School, she earned an MBA degree.
