Fanchini last competed in December 2017 and did not compete in the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 due to Cancer treatment. 

The World downhill silver medalist in 2005 died Wednesday at her home in Solato, located near Brescia, according to the Italian Winter Sports Federation.

Between her two World Cup victories, Fanchini competed in three Olympics, finishing 12th in the downhill in 2014. Because of her condition, she could not compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Fanchini died the same day that fellow Italian Marta Bassino won the super-G at the world championships in Meribel, France. Two days after, another former teammate, Federica Brignone, won gold in the combined.

In a brief statement, the federation revealed that Fanchini died at her home in Solato at the end of a long illness. Her death occurred nearly five years after her initial diagnosis in 2018, when she was forced to withdraw from the Pyeongchang Olympics due to health concerns.
