Elizabeth Tsurkov Missing Update: Is Israeli-Russian Researcher Found Yet?

Elizabeth Tsurkov, the Israeli-Russian researcher who went missing in Iraq in late March, has not yet been found.

The situation remains concerning, and efforts are ongoing to determine her whereabouts and secure her safe return.

Tsurkov is an esteemed academic focusing on Middle Eastern affairs, particularly in war-torn Syria.

Known for her extensive experience working with human rights organizations in the region, she was pursuing her doctoral studies at Princeton University at the time of her disappearance.

Reports suggest that Tsurkov was taken captive by the Shiite group Kataeb Hezbollah or Hezbollah Brigades, an Iran-backed militia listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the group’s leader, was killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad’s international airport in January 2020.

Tsurkov’s last known communication was on March 21 through her Twitter account. She had expressed her desire to leave Iraq and return to the United States to complete her dissertation.

Concerns grew when her colleagues at the Washington-based think tank New Lines Institute reported that a pro-Iranian militia in Baghdad had kidnapped her.

The New Lines Institute staff refrained from disclosing the incident initially, respecting the family’s wishes and hoping for a swift resolution.

They contacted American and foreign officials, including Princeton University, without any news of her release, for assistance.

They called upon the United States government to aid in securing Tsurkov’s release, even though she is not a U.S. national.

Tsurkov’s family, based in Israel, expressed their distress over the situation and held the Iraqi government responsible for her safety.

Due to the absence of diplomatic relations between Israel and Iraq, Tsurkov entered Iraq on her Russian passport.

The State Department spokesperson condemned the abduction of private citizens and deferred to Iraqi authorities for comments.

However, it remains to be seen if the U.S. government will actively participate in efforts to obtain Tsurkov’s release.

The international community continues to follow developments in this unfortunate case closely.

Concerned individuals and organizations hope for a swift and safe resolution, praying for Tsurkov’s well-being and immediate release from her unlawful detention.
