Senot is one of the few survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps, where over a million people, mostly Jews, were killed during World War II.
Located in Poland, it was the largest of the Nazi concentration camps and was in operation from 1940 until its liberation by Soviet forces in 1945.
After being deported on September 2, 1943, she arrived in Birkenau and was able to find her sister by chance.
They were allowed some freedom in the latrine barrack in the evenings as the kapos avoided it due to the bad smell. Despite arriving in September, she didn’t recognize her sister until December.
She remained with her until April 1944, when her sister fell ill and was sent to “le Revier” (the ***** room). She hurried to see her sister, and that’s when her sister embraced her.

Age Of Esther Senot: How Old Is She?
Born in 1929, Esther Senot is 95 years old. Esther’s family was apprehended during the Vel d’Hiv roundup in Paris in July 1942.
Despite being a teenager then, Esther managed to survive the ordeal. But, a year later, she was arrested during an identity check, and her life turned into nightmare.
She was taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau and confined in block 27 with 600 other individuals.
Being processed into the concentration camp involved being stripped of their clothes, shaved heads, and tattooed with identification numbers.
The process was dehumanizing, and they were instructed to memorize their number in German and Polish since their names no longer referred to them. Esther’s number was 58 319.

Family And Ethnicity Of Esther Senot
Esther Senot’s parents, Nuchim and Gela, moved to France in 1930 with their seven children, including Esther, the sixth child.
The family lived in Belleville and spoke Yiddish. Although they were not religious, they were communists.
Esther’s mother was disabled and stayed home while her father worked as a shoemaker but had fragile health.
One of Esther’s brothers, Israel, fought in the Spanish Civil War with the International Brigades in 1936 and left for the Soviet Union in 1939.
Another brother, Maurice, served in the military in 1937 and experienced the Phoney War and the Debacle, ending up in Pau with his regiment in 1940.
