Frank McGarvey, a former forward for Celtic and St. Mirren, passed away from Illness at age 66.

Before a match against Hibernian, he appeared on the Celtic Park field to thank the crowd for their support after disclosing his Cancer diagnosis in October.

Glasgow-born McGarvey began his professional career at St Mirren and, after a brief stint at Liverpool, enjoyed five prosperous years at Celtic starting in 1980.

McGarvey, who earned seven Scotland caps, later played for Queen of the South and Clyde before returning to St. Mirren. In 499 senior league games, he scored 174 goals. He would have played for Scotland much more frequently in a different era.

During his time with his hometown club, McGarvey assisted Celtic in winning three domestic cups and two league championships.

The identical messages from his sons on Twitter stated that their Father had been diagnosed with Cancer that day and that they were awaiting more information from the experts.

After the news broke on social media, fans quickly paid tribute.

Dubai Hoops Celtic Supporters Club announced on Twitter that everyone associated with the CSC is sending love and prayers to their friend and club legend Frank McGarvey, who is battling Illness.

They also stated that they all knew he wouldn’t take it lying down and that, like everything else, he would fight it. Sadly, Frank lost his fight with Cancer.

McGarvey revealed his battle with “sneaky” pancreatic Cancer during a pre-game appearance on the Parkhead pitch against Hibernian in October.

McGarvey stated that he was at Celtic Park to watch the Hibs game and that when he walked out, and the fans sang You’ll Never Walk Alone, it inspired him to continue fighting.

Whitacres Wolves, a boy’s football team from Nitshill in Glasgow, posted photos of Mcgarvey at their awards day and stated that the team’s thoughts are with Frank and his family at this time. Frank was a last-minute replacement for a late call-out on their first awards day in 2017, and he was fantastic with the kids.

Frank Mcgarvey Career Achievements

Frank McGarvey, from Glasgow, joined St Mirren in 1975 and decided to stay for four years before leaving for £270,000 to join Liverpool. He left Merseyside without making a first-team appearance the following year, in March 1980, to join boyhood heroes Celtic. He won two league titles, a League Cup, and two Scottish Cups.

His final game for Celtic was the 1985 Scottish Cup final against Dundee United, which Celtic won 2-1 at Hampden Park. He won the Scottish Cup again with St Mirren in 1987 before finishing his senior career as a player/manager with Queen of the South.

McGarvey made his debut for Scotland as a late substitute in a Home International Championship match against Northern Ireland at Hampden Park in May 1979.
