George McGinnis, a basketball hall of famer, passed away at the age of 73. The Indiana Pacers made the announcement Thursday morning.

According to ESPN, McGinnis was admitted to the hospital after going into cardiac arrest at his house last week.

The Pacers stated in their press release that “McGinnis succumbed to complications from a cardiac arrest suffered last week at his home.”

After being brought to Community North Hospital, “a vigil of support was maintained until his passing by family, friends, and former teammates.”

Before the ABA’s merger with the NBA, McGinnis started his professional basketball career in 1971 with the Pacers.

Generations of Hoosiers have many of their best basketball memories influenced by George McGinnis.

He was a champion, a Hall of Famer, and the epitome of an Indiana basketball legend, according to a statement from Simon Family.

But that wasn’t all he was. George was a member of the family.

As much of a fixture on the Pacers team as anyone, George is a devoted supporter of his fellow ABA players and a constant source of joy.

With the Pacers, McGinnis claimed two titles in the American Basketball Association and shared the 1974–75 ABA MVP award with Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

In 1973, McGinnis was selected by the Sixers with the 22nd pick in the second round of the NBA Draft.

With the Sixers, the 6-foot-8 power forward was a member of two All-Star teams and helped guide the club to the NBA Finals in 1977.

McGinnis averaged 21.6 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in his three seasons with the Sixers.

Before concluding his career with the Pacers, McGinnis was a member of the Denver Nuggets. In 1982, he ended his 11-year professional career as a Pacer.

He is one of four Pacers whose number (30) has been retired. In 2017, McGinnis was admitted into the Basketball Hall of Fame of the Naismith Memorial.

Personal Life Of George Mcginnis

McGinnis went to Indianapolis’ Washington High School. In 1969, he and fellow teammate Steve Downing guided Washington to a 31-0 record and a state title.

With 148 points in his final four games, McGinnis broke the scoring mark for the Indiana State tournament.

In that same year, he was also named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball.

Having played at Indiana University and George Washington High School in Indianapolis, he was a hometown hero.
