However, a Twitter user tried to instigate the Dragon by asking him how he, as a Slovenian, is celebrating Orthodox Christmas.

Dragic politely responded, “I am a Slovene of the Orthodox faith. On this holiday, I wish you peace of mind and joy in your heart.”  

Goran’s religious stance has always been a point of controversy in Slovenia. However, he has always handled it with grace and maturity. 

The former Phoenix Suns player’s Father is from Serbia, and his mother is from Slovenia. Therefore, the NBA star is honoring his Father’s Serbian Orthodox roots as a Christian Orthodox. 

Dragic is tolerant and respectful of all religions. In an interview with Delo, a premier Slovenian newspaper, he said, “Everybody on this planet has the right to believe in their own God if they feel that way, whether it is Jesus, Allah, or Buddha … I respect all religions.”

Goran Dragic Family: His Younger Brother Is Also A Basketball Player 

Goran Dragic was born on May 6, 1986, in Ljubljana, Slovenia to Marinko Dragic and Mojca Dragic.

The Dragics have an athletic gene. Mojca Dragic, Goran’s mother, was a professional basketball player for the Slovenian team, Ilirija, until she was pregnant with the player.

Likewise, his Father, Marinko, was an amateur football player. The Bulls player used to play football until the age of 17. However, an injury made him switch from football to basketball. 

Goran’s younger brother, Zoran Dragic, is also a professional basketball player and a former NBA player. 

The Dragic brothers briefly played together for the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat in the 2014-15 NBA season. 

The Slovenian player was married to a Slovenian woman named Maja Dragic, the daughter of a construction businessman. The pair married in a Slovenian church in 2013 and wore crowns as part of Orthodox wedding customs. 

However, Goran and his wife separated in 2021 because of alleged cheating rumors. 

They have two beautiful children together, a son and a daughter. Their firstborn son, Mateo, was born in 2013, and their daughter, Victoria, was born in 2016.

Goran’s Father, Marinko, is originally from Bosnia. Marinko came to Slovenia as a refugee and met his future wife, Mojca.

The basketball player is proud of both his parents’ heritage. The Spurs’ newest member is a proud Slovenian as he was born and raised there. 

At the same time, Dragic sees people beyond their nationalities and geographical boundaries. In an interview, the 36-year-old player said, “I think it is not important who you believe in, what color your skin is, or where you come from; I can see only one thing: whether you are a good or bad person.”

While at the Miami Heat, Goran felt a little uncomfortable that he was the only white person on a team with eleven African-American members. However, over time, the Slovenian got to experience their kindness and soon became close like brothers.

The star player also has a foundation called “The Goran Dragic Foundation.” The organization works towards providing equal opportunities in sports to children of all backgrounds. 

Goran was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2014. IN 2018, he was included in the NBA All-star for the first time.

In August 2018, the Bosnian government honored the professional athlete with an Order of Njegos and a Medal of Merit for the People.
