Charles A. “Gus” Manning was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 8, 2023. He attended Rule High School and served in the US Marine Corps during World War II.

Manning was an athletic person who liked playing football and baseball from a young age.

Regarding Manning’s education, he enrolled in the University of Tennessee in 1947 and was a walk-on football player. He also earned a varsity letter in baseball in 1948.

The Knoxville-born Manning graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1950.

Gus was then hired as sporting information director by General Robert R. Neyland in 1951.

Manning was employed by the University of Tennessee athletic department for almost five decades until his retirement in 2000.

After retiring, Manning became a part-time consultant to the UT athletics director. 

At UT, Manning served as sports information director, senior associate athletics director, and administrative assistant.

All in all, his work covered all aspects of the athletics department’s operations.

Sadly, Gus Manning passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at the Nursing Center at Little Creek, aged 99.

Gus Mannings Honors And Achievements

Gus Manning was inducted into three Hall of Fames at UT- Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame, and TSSAA Football Officials Hall of Fame.

In 1989, College Athletics Business Mangers Association named him the national business manager of the year.

He also served as the president of the Southeastern Conference sports information directors and president of the SEC business managers.

In 2019, Manning was honored by the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame with the Pat Summitt Ignite Greatness Award.

The crowning moment of the Tennessee great was in 2015 when he got a gate named after him in Neyland Stadium.

Gate 16, ideally located a few feet away from the statue of his idol  General Robert R. Neyland, was named Gus Manning Gate after him.

Manning was known for having the longest streak of attending 608 consecutive Volunteers football games.

His streak was interrupted in 2003 when he slipped on ice, injuring his leg en route to the Kentucky game in Lexington.

Manning was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Elks Lodge 160.

Tennessee alumni and Indianapolis Colts legend Peyton Manning posted his tribute to Gus on his Instagram, writing he was the “ultimate Tennessee Volunteer.”
