American football quarterback Eugene Cyril “Geno” Smith III plays for the National Football League’s Seattle Seahawks (NFL).

Before being selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, he played college football at West Virginia. He helped the Mountaineers win numerous bowl games, set passing records, and multiple honors.

Smith spent his final two years with the Jets as the team’s starting quarterback after two disappointing seasons, but injuries ultimately cost him the job.

After that, he served as a backup quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers, and New York Giants before unpredictably reviving his career in 2022 as the team’s starting quarterback.

The seasoned quarterback has endured gut punches throughout his NFL career, whether caused by injury, subpar performance, or commotion around him. But one point, one genuine hit, permanently changed his NFL career.

On August 11, 2015, Jets defensive end IK Enemkpali physically handed Smith a punch. This allowed backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to go in and take over as the starter. He took it and ran with it.

Even though Smith’s career began with ups and downs, and he received more backup opportunities than starting roles, he has since settled into a solid job with himself.

However, Smith will get another chance to start the next chapter of his career in 2022 when the Seahawks make him their starter.

According to Jets head coach Todd Bowles, Smith was diagnosed with a broken jaw on August 11, 2015, following an altercation with another player in the locker room. The blow was referred to as a “sucker punch” by Bowles.

It turns out that defensive end IK Enemkpali decked Smith for an idiotic reason, too.

Smith had agreed to go to Enemkpali’s football camp in exchange for Enemkpali paying for his flight to Texas. The parties decided to split the cost of the tickets, which had a $1,200 value.

After Smith’s brother was injured in a bike accident a few days prior, the quarterback decided not to attend the camp.

The former second-round pick chose after getting a second opinion, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN, and he is anticipated to be sidelined for six to 10 weeks.

Following the incident, the Jets dismissed Enemkpali, but the Buffalo Bills claimed him on Wednesday, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan mentored the former Louisiana Tech star during his first year with New York in 2014.
