The University of Idaho students may have been the victims of a “crime of passion” or a “property crime gone wrong,” according to the mayor of Moscow, Idaho.

Four college students of Idaho University were found dead in a small Idaho town, and the mayor said that almost any scenario could be to blame for the “senseless” killings.

Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were all students at the University of Idaho.

Moscow Mayor Art Bettge suggested that a property crime “gone wrong” or a “crime of passion” could have been the cause of their deaths.

According to the memo, Chapin was a freshman from Mount Vernon, Washington, who majored in recreation, sport, and tourism management and was a member of the fraternity Sigma Chi.

Junior and marketing major Kernodle from Post Falls, Idaho, was a part of the sorority Pi Beta Phi.

Goncalves, a senior from Rathdrum, Idaho, was a part of the sorority Alpha Phi and majored in general.

It needed to be clarified how some students related to one another. Goncalves wrote: “One lucky girl to be surrounded by these ppl every day,” alongside a photo of herself and several friends, including Mogen, in a post on Instagram on Saturday.

Idaho Students Killing: What Happened?

When Police were called to an off-campus residence just before noon on Sunday, they found the students dead, according to the city.

In a statement, the city identified them as homicide victims but gave no further information, noting that there was no suspect in custody.

Attempts to reach a Police spokesperson for comment on Monday were unsuccessful.

Without a suspect or knowledge of what might have been missing from the House, according to Bettge, a motive is still elusive. To allow an investigation to move forward meticulously, he said, “Patience is needed.”

On Sunday, November 13, 2022, Police investigated a homicide at an apartment building south of the University of Idaho campus.

In a separate statement on Monday, Bettge referred to the students’ deaths as a tragic event that serves as a sobering reminder that senseless acts of violence can happen anywhere, at any time, and that our community is not immune from such occurrences.

An “Edged Weapon” Was Likely Used

According to Police, four University of Idaho students were killed using what investigators believe to be an edged weapon on Tuesday. In this case, all four students discovered dead inside a House close to campus on Sunday are victims.

Even though no weapons have been discovered, Moscow Police Captain Anthony Dahlinger stated that investigators believe an edged weapon, such as a knife, was used. There are no suspects in police custody.

The results of the autopsies, expected later this week, may reveal more details about the precise cause of death.

No suspects have been named by investigators, according to the Moscow Police Department, which insisted that the killings were the result of “an isolated, targeted attack” and that there was “no immediate threat to the community at large.”
