Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been imprisoned by the Kogi State High Court, for disobeying a court order. Abdulrasheed Bawa Arrested case has been gaining enormous attention recently. 

Abdulrasheed Bawa is a Nigerian detective and law enforcement official who has led the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since February 24th, 2021.

Umar Mohammed Abba, the commission’s acting chairman, was replaced by him. He served as the anti-graft agency’s Deputy Chief Superintendent prior to being appointed.

On February 16, 2021, Bawa was nominated as the EFCC’s substantive Chairman.

Furthermore, on  24th February 2021, the National Assembly confirmed Bawa as the Executive Chairman, effectively replacing Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the previous acting Chairman of the Commission.

Bawa who has been involved in politics for several years now has been recently jailed by the Kogi State High Court in Lokoja for defying a court order.

 Abdulrasheed Bawa: Is He Arrested?

Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been imprisoned by the Kogi State High Court, presided over by Justice R.O. Ayoola, for defying a court order.

The court then ordered the arrest of Bawa and his detention in Kuje Prison for the ensuing 14 days while he cleared himself of contempt.

In his verdict on Monday in Lokoja, Justice R.O. Ayoola approved the EFCC chairman’s request to be committed to prison for breaching a court order issued on November 30, 2022, ordering the Bawa to turn over Ali Bello, the case’s applicant.

Sumaila Abbas, the applicant’s attorney, had taken Bawa to court for unlawfully detaining and arresting Bello.

The court decided in Bawa’s favor, but three days later, the EFCC charged Bawa with money laundering.

The EFCC’s requests for the verdict to be set aside and for a stay of execution were denied for lack of merit.

The court had ordered the EFCC Chairman to appear before it on January 18, 2022, to explain why he should not be imprisoned for disobeying the order issued on December 12, 2022, in a case brought by Ali Bello against EFCC and Bawa, who were the first and second respondents, respectively.

The form was marked “HCL/697M/2022” and was titled “Notice to Show Cause Why Order of Committal Should Not Be Made.”

The motion of notice and Form 49 were to be served via substituted methods on the EFCC and Bawa, the court ordered.

Is The EFCC Chairman Recently In Jail Or Prison?

Abdulrasheed Bawa is recently imprisoned and the court has ruled that the applicant’s arrest and detention was unlawful, unconstitutional, and in violation of the applicant’s right to personal liberty and dignity under Chapter IV of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Constitution.

The court also mandated that the respondents apologize to the petitioner in a major publication and granted him N10 million in damages.

Abdulrasheed Bawa’s Theft Allegation Case In September 2020

Abdulrasheed has been surrounded by controversies every now and then and this is not the first time that he has been alleged of fraud.

When Bawa was in charge of the Port Harcourt office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Peoples Gazette revealed in an exclusive report in September 2020 how he stole and sold dozens of petrol-bearing trucks that had been seized from suspected looters, auctioning them off to his proxies at exorbitant prices.

According to the report, Ibrahim Magu, the commission’s acting chairman at the time, arrested Bawa and held him in custody for a number of days.

Bawa was then fired from his job in Port Harcourt and moved to the agency’s Abuja training facility. 

After Magu was fired and he was nominated to take over as Chairman of the EFCC, civil society organizations denounced the candidacy and urged the Nigerian Senate to reject it.
