According to Bloomberg News, Justice Department investigators in the Southern District of New York are investigating the suspected transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars from the U.S. to the Bahamas just before his FTX bitcoin exchange sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to prior reports, federal prosecutors in Manhattan are also looking into whether Bankman-Fried manipulated cryptocurrency markets by organizing trades that caused the collapse of the TerraUSD coin earlier this year.

In the meantime, Bloomberg reported that Stephanie Avakian, a partner at the white-shoe law firm Wilmer Hale and the former enforcement division chief at the Securities and Exchange Commission, has been hired by Ellison, the former CEO of FTX’s sister hedge fund Alameda Research.

Avakian previously worked for the SEC.

Is Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison Arrested? 

An attorney who looked into the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scam and a former top SEC official make up the legal team Sam Bankman-ex-girlfriend Fried has hired.

As authorities press in on Bankman-Fried over the multibillion-dollar collapse of his crypto trading firm FTX, Caroline Ellison, 28, has hired the two legal titans of the financial industry.

Ellison served as CEO of Alameda Research, another business started by Bankman-Fried that has been charged with using FTX customer funds for dangerous transactions while gambling.

Investigators will scrutinize her to see if FTX misappropriated billions of dollars in client cash by sending them to Alameda.

According to some estimates, roughly one million investors were due a total of $10 billion due to FTX’s bankruptcy filing last month.

A former U.S. Securities and Exchange director is supposedly Caroline Ellison’s new attorney. Caroline Ellison is the disgraced CEO of Alameda Research.

According to Bloomberg, Ellison’s new attorney, Stephanie Avakian, previously handled high-profile cases like those against Theranos scammer Elizabeth Holmes and Elon Musk after the latter tweeted false comments about Tesla.

Avakian was also involved in the lawsuits against discount brokerage Robinhood for deceiving customers about its “paying for order flow” business model and Ripple Labs for allegedly offering $1.3 billion in securities (the XRP token sale).

Alameda Research, a subsidiary of FTX, operated as a market maker, cryptocurrency hedge fund, and venture capitalist in the cryptocurrency industry.

Allegations of exploiting FTX customer funds for reckless wagers have haunted the Company, ultimately forcing both enterprises to declare bankruptcy last month.
