Councilman Devin Keith of Huntsville, Alabama, was arrested last week, on February 2, for allegedly shoplifting at a Walmart on University Drive.

He was charged with fourth-degree theft for a Class A misdemeanor, with a sentence of a maximum fine of $6,000 and up to one year in jail.

Keith was first elected to the Huntsville City Council in October 2016. His popularity led him to get re-elected in 2020, and he is currently serving his second term on the City Council.

Similarly, His district covers parts of downtown and most of North Huntsville, including Alabama A&M University.

Is Devyn Keith In Jail?

Devyn Keith was in jail for allegedly shoplifting at a Walmart store on University Drive. However, he was released on the same day of his arrest.

On February 2, 2023, Huntsville Police Department (HPD) dispatched officers to 6140 University Drive at 1 p.m. on an unrelated call.

While on the scene, officers were alerted of a shoplifting incident at the nearby Walmart store.

The shoplifter was identified as Devyn Keith, a council member since 2016.

Keith was arrested without incident and booked into the Madison County Jail. 

After the arrest and initial investigation, police released Keith at 5:34 p.m. the same day.

The next day, Keith released a statement on his Facebook addressing the situation. 

He clarified that he had left Walmart after a self-checkout. However, he failed to pay for a $20 pair of headphones in his cart.

Following the statement, many people related to the situation and said they sometimes forget to pay for items at a self-checkout.

Keith’s friends and well-wishers have supported him following the shoplifting accusation.

Huntsville Councilman Devyn Keith Charges

Following the shoplifting incident and his arrest, Devyn Keith was charged with one count of property theft- shoplifting items $500 or less. 

According to Alabama law, the charge is a Class A misdemeanor, with a possible sentence of up to one year in jail and up to a $6,000 fine.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office recently announced that Councilman Keith is facing additional theft charges.

The Sheriff’s office has already released an arrest warrant for the Council member.

A spokesman said that Keith was expected to turn himself in after the second warrant.

The District 1 council member is facing four misdemeanor charges, alleging he stole more items from the Walmart store.

The Huntsville Police Department initially handled the case.

However, it has now been transferred to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office to avoid any conflict of interest or perception.

Devyn Keith’s lawyer John Taylor said he currently had no comment.

Keith graduated from Samford University in 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Human Development and Family Studies.

Subsequently, Keith then joined The University of Massachusetts Boston and graduated in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

Upon being elected to the City Council in 2016, Devyn Keith became the youngest elected official in Huntsville’s history.

Moreover, he was also the youngest to ever serve as the President of the City Council.
