Hayley Sproull’s fans must know she has suffered from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

According to Mayo Clinic, PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that occurs during the reproductive years. A woman with the condition may notice infrequent periods or periods that last a long time.

Furthermore, the condition might result in several side effects, including infertility, miscarriage or premature birth, gestational diabetes or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis – a serious liver inflammation due to fat buildup.

Hayley Sproull’s Struggle With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Hayley Sproull was only 16 years old when her mother suspected she was pregnant. It seemed to be the only explanation, as months would pass between her periods.

The Great Kiwi Bake Off co-host revealed that she had peed several pregnancy test kits until she learned about her health condition four years later.

While living with a friend from Toi Whakaari Drama School, her flatmate thought she had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Soon after, Hayley went to get all the tests, which was true.

Sproull was diagnosed with PCOS through an ultrasound and blood tests in 2010. She said the doctor explained the condition was the reason for her infrequent periods and the mustache she sported throughout her teenage.

Since her diagnosis, Sproull has been on a somewhat personal journey, attempting to learn all she can about PCOS and its treatment.

Though the media personality is unsure how her condition developed, she is aware that it can’t be cured and is accompanied by a variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms.

The “cosmetic” side effects of PCOS, as termed by Sproull, were not discussed when she was initially diagnosed and included stubborn belly fat, weight swings, acne, mood swings, and crazy hair loss.

But she said that cosmetic things are the things that we live with every day and are horrible. Sproull created a documentary, Cystic Sister, which was aired on TVNZ. It tells the experiences of other Kiwi Women in the entertainment industry suffering from PCOS.
