The New York Yankees traded him to the Houston Astros in September 1985 for Joe Niekro.
Deshaies had his first entire season with the Astros in 1986, and in that year, he set an Astros rookie record with 12 victories, which Roy Oswalt eventually surpassed in 2001.
Deshaies was a trustworthy part of the Astros’ rotation from 1986 through 1991, making at least 25 starts each year.
1989 was the best season for the former pitcher. He finished with a 15-10 record, 2.91 ERA, and 153 strikeouts. Mike Schmidt hit his last home run off Deshaies on 2 May of that year, also his 548th.
