The Last Movie Stars, the newest documentary from HBO, debuted on July 21 2022 and is quite intriguing. 

The documentary explores the tale of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, two young Hollywood actors who fell in love and later rose to fame.

The impact this power duo had on other actors is also discussed in the documentary. While Newman died in 2008, it’s natural to question whether Woodward is still alive and, if so, where she is now.  

The answer to the question of whether Joanne Woodward still alive is yes. Joanne Woodward is certainly still alive. Woodward made more of a transition into producing and directing positions in the twenty-first century.

Joanne was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007, just days before her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

It’s interesting to note that Joanne portrayed Barbara, a woman with Alzheimer’s, in the 1985 television film Do You Remember Love? 

The New York Times praised Miss Woodward for showing Barbara’s illness progression through “an incredible range of emotional colors, from bratty girl to fearful woman, while never losing contact with the character’s fierce intelligence.” 

The performance was “an hommage” to Joanne’s mother, who she revealed to the publication was an Alzheimer’s patient.

Personal Life Of Joanne Woodward

The daughter of Elinor (née Trimmier) and Wade Woodward, Jr., vice president of the publishing house Charles Scribner’s Sons, Joanne Gignilliat Trimmier was born on February 27, 1930, in Thomasville, Georgia.

She was given the middle name “Gignilliat Trimmier” by Huguenot ancestors. Her mother’s love of movies greatly impacted her decision to become an actress.

When the Gone with the Wind premiere took place in Atlanta, nine-year-old Woodward ran into the parade of celebrities and perched on Vivien Leigh’s co-star Laurence Olivier’s knee. 

In 1977 she finally collaborated with Olivier on a Come Back, Little Sheba television production. She brought up this incident to him during rehearsals, and he acknowledged remembering it.

Woodward was born and raised in Thomasville before moving with her family to Marietta, Georgia, where she attended Marietta Polytech Citadel High School. She continues to support the Strand Theater and Marietta High School.

After her parents’ divorce, the family relocated once more to Greenville, South Carolina, when she was a junior in high school.

She attended Greenville High School, where she received her diploma. She also appeared at the Little Theater in Greenville.

After graduating from Louisiana State University with a degree in drama and becoming a member of the sorority Chi Omega, Woodward moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. 

She pursued acting training at the Actors Studio and theater training at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under Sanford Meisner there.
