Assange has described himself as an atheist and a skeptic of organized religion. He has also criticized the concept of a monotheistic God as a totalitarian and oppressive force.

In an interview with Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon, Assange asked him: “You have fought against the hegemony of the United States.”

“The idea of a God, or Allah, is the ultimate superpower, thus as a freedom fighter, shouldn’t one of your goals be to free people from the oppressive idea of a monotheistic God?”

Nasrallah replied that resisting American hegemony was a religious duty because morals come from God, and that human principles are consistent with the law of the heavens.

Assange has also denied any connection to Judaism, despite some claims that he has Jewish ancestry. In an interview with The New Statesman, he said: “I’m not Jewish and there’s no Jewish blood in my family.”

Julian Assange Family: Ethnicity and Origin

Assange was born as Julian Paul Hawkins on 3 July 1971 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. His mother is Christine Ann Hawkins, a visual artist, and his father is John Shipton, an anti-war activist and builder.

Assange’s parents separated before he was born, and he never met his biological father until he was 25 years old.

He was mostly raised by his mother and her partner, Brett Assange, who gave him his surname.

Assange’s family moved around frequently when he was young, living in over 30 towns across Australia. He attended several schools and was also homeschooled for some time.

He developed an interest in computers and hacking at an early age, and was involved in several cyberattacks in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He was convicted of hacking in 1996 but received a lenient sentence. Assange has four children from different relationships.

He married Teresa Assange in 1989 when he was 18 years old, and they had a son named Daniel. They divorced in 1999.

He also has another son with Sarah Harrison, a former WikiLeaks associate who helped him escape to Ecuador’s embassy in London in 2012.

He has two more children with Stella Moris-Smith Robertson, a lawyer who represents him in his legal battles. They married in 2022 while he was in prison.

Assange’s ethnicity is mainly European, with some traces of Aboriginal Australian ancestry from his maternal grandmother’s side.

He has said that he identifies as Australian and does not hold any other citizenship besides his native one.

However, he was granted Ecuadorian citizenship in 2017, which was later revoked in 2021 after his asylum was withdrawn by Ecuador’s government.
