She was released after 107 days in prison by her attorneys, who raised €5,000 (£4,450) in bond.
“I was arrested because I was handing over water and blankets and translating for the refugees arriving every night on the [Lesbos] shoreline,” she explained in a TED interview.
Because of her arrest, she could not attend Bard College in Berlin, where she had received a scholarship.
Sara is still fighting, even though the case against her has severely impacted her mental health.

They volunteered for a Lesvos-based sea search and rescue organization, where they assisted people in distress at sea.
They were imprisoned for spying, people smuggling, and belonging to a criminal organization before being released on bail in December 2018 while awaiting trial.
The trial against her and her group began in November 2021 in Greece and is still ongoing. She appeared in a Greek court in November 2022 to maintain her innocence. Sara faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Sara and Yusra Mardini have aspired to be Olympians since they were little. When the Syrian civil war threatened their lives, they felt that ending up in Germany would be the greatest option to survive and achieve their goals.
They had to swim for three hours from the Turkish coast to Lesbos, a Greek island. Swimming was an important part of Sara’s life, but she had to give it up owing to a shoulder injury.
Yusra wanted Sara to join her team when she got to compete in 2016, which was Rio Olympics as part of the Refugee Olympic Team, but Sara had stopped swimming.
According to reports, she was in “physical and emotional pain” after relocating to Germany, which influenced her decision to end her professional swimming career.
