On Thursday, March 23, 2023, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew appeared in front of Congress to testify on security issues surrounding the platform.
The app, which boasts 150 million American users, has been a hot topic issue within the nation due to its ties with China and worries user data will be stalked and used for aims unknown to the American government and the nation’s account holders.
Rep. McMorris Rodgers said TikTok is a weapon by the Chinese Communist Party to spy on American citizens. Meanwhile, TikTok’s CEO disputed the allegations claiming U.S. user data is secure from the Chinese government.
Chew added that the platform does not stick to direction from the Chinese government, but this assertion failed to convince lawmakers. Lawmakers also addressed the app’s impact on kids and young adults, saying many models where the app has had a negative impact.
As TikTok continues under the microscope, Thursday’s hearing signals that lawmakers will move forward with plans for a national app ban. In a tweet on March 26, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy appeared to confirm plans to ban TikTok.
