Ardern said she did not believe she had the proper strength and backing to seek re-election in the October 2023 polls.
She is the 40th prime minister of New Zealand, having assumed office on 26 October 2017.
The 42-year-old has also been the Labor Party leader since August 1, 2017, replacing Andrew Little.
