After attending New Trier High School in Winnetka, Jake enrolled at the University of Iowa. During high school, he decided to drop the surname inherited from his father and adopt his mother’s maiden name.

Johnson developed a passion for writing and aspired to be admitted into the prestigious Dramatic Writing Department of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.
