Fontaine signed with Stade de Reims in 1956 and helped the team reach the European Cup final in 1959.

In his playing career at the club level, Fontaine scored an impressive 259 goals from 283 games and won three French top-flight titles.

Fontaine was one of the best players for the France national football team. He scored 31 goals in just 21 matches over seven years.

He is regarded as one of the most influential French players ever. His debut was a banger, with a hat-trick on France’s 8-0 demolition of Luxembourg in December 1953.

However, the best feat of Fontaine’s goalscoring is the 13 goals in a single FIFA World Cup in 1958.

His goalscoring performance at that tournament is still unmatched till the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
