France football legend Just Fontaine *****, aged 89, was recently announced by his family.

The family released a statement stating that Fontaine passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. 

The French legend’s family has not revealed the exact cause of his *****.

However, since he was 89, Fontaine may have died of natural causes.

The former French footballer is known for his prolific career as a forward for club and country.

Fontaine was famously known for being the highest scorer in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup, with 13 goals in just six games.

Following the news of Just Fontaine *****, numerous obituaries and tributes have been posted online by many footballers and clubs.

French national newspaper L’equpe shared the news of Fontaine’s passing on their social media and online publication.

Paris Saint-Germain shared their tribute to the footballer on Twitter, stating that Fontaine led the team into the first division as a manager 50 years ago.

Moreover, numerous international news media, such as Mirror, Daily Mail, The Athletic, and Associated Press, wrote obituaries on Fontaine’s passing.

Just Fontaine Family And Career

During his childhood, the family moved to Casablanca, where Fontaine attended the Lycée Lyautey.

He started his football career in 1950 for USM Casablanca and was recruited by Nice in 1953, where he scored 44 goals in three seasons.

In 1956, Fontaine moved to Stade de Reims and scored 121 goals in six seasons for the club.

During his career in Nice and Stade de Reims, Fontaine scored 165 goals in 200 matches in Ligue 1, winning the championship twice.

The French legend was also on the Stade de Reims team, which Real Madrid defeated in the 1958-59 European Cup final; he was the season’s top scorer with ten goals.

For the National team, Fontaine became one of the most influential players of all time.

He scored a hat trick on his debut match for France in their 8-0 demolition of Luxembourg on December 17, 1953.

Fontaine had an impressive goal-to-match ratio for the national team; in 21 matches over seven years, Fontaine scored 31 goals for the Blues.

However, Fontaine’s most extraordinary feat will always be his 1958 FIFA World Cup performance.

He scored 13 goals in six matches, including four against the defending champions West Germany.

This Golden Boot record of 13 goals in a single World Cup still stands today. 

As of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Fontaine is tied with Lionel Messi as the forth-top scorer in FIFA World Cup history, only behind Gerd Müller (14 goals), Ronaldo (15 goals), and Miroslav Klose (16 goals).
