Pearson disclosed to “Start Here” that he lost one of his friends/classmates to gun violence. He pointed out that this year’s murder rate in his district is up 44% from last year’s.
The protest in Tennessee came after “The Covenant School Shooting” on 27 March 2023. The mass shooting shot and killed six people, including three kids.
The shooter, Audrey Hale, was also killed while responding to a police officer on the same day. It has been reported that the shooting suspect legally purchased seven guns.
But Hale had mental health disorder and was undergoing treatment for an emotional disorder.
Justin Pearson Family Background – He Hails From Memphis
Born in 1995, Justin J. Pearson is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. The politician’s mother is a teacher, and his father is a preacher.
When Pearson was 11, his family relocated to Washington, D.C. Justin’s dad pursued a master’s degree at Howard University.
He was startled to see the difference between his new school, which was underfunded, and his old high school in Centreville, Virginia, four years after the Pearson family moved back to Memphis.
Pearson got involved in student government at Mitchell High School in inner-city Memphis, advocated for textbooks and AP courses, and joined the debate team. He was the class valedictorian when he graduated from high school.
In 2017, Pearson earned his bachelor’s degree in Government & Legal Studies from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
