Laphonza Butler Parents: Who Are They? Family Details

Butler, the youngest of three children, was born on May 11, 1979, in Magnolia, Mississippi. When she was 16 years old, her father passed away from heart disease. Laphonza Butler parents names are yet to be revealed online.

Butler graduated from South Pike High School in 1997 as a salutatorian. 2001 she graduated with a bachelor’s in political science from Jackson State University.

In Baltimore, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and New Haven, Connecticut, Butler started her career as a union organizer for nurses, janitors, and hospital employees.

As a result, Butler and her two siblings had to rely on their mother, who also served as her father’s primary caregiver before to his passing, to make ends meet. 

This included working multiple jobs as a classroom assistant, a home care provider, a security guard, and a bookkeeper.

“Her sacrifice was always very clear,” Butler remarked in an interview with Elle magazine about her mother’s nightly CNA shifts. 

They were the family who discussed what it meant to be of service to others at the dinner table, not the family that discussed elections or politics. 

In that regard, she believes that my mother’s influence carries and advances her.

Personal Life And Career Of Laphonza Butler

Butler is a lesbian who shares a daughter with her wife, Neneki Lee. When she was elected president of EMILY’s List in 2021, they relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland. Still, they kept their residence in View Park, California, which is a part of Los Angeles County. 

When Governor Newsom chose her to replace Dianne Feinstein in the Senate upon her death in October 2023, she formally changed her residence to that address and re-registered to vote in California.

She relocated to California in 2009 and worked as president of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers, SEIU Local 2015, and organized nurses and in-home caregivers. 

In 2013, Butler won the position of California SEIU State Council president. She worked to increase California’s minimum wage and income taxes for the state’s wealthiest residents.

 Butler supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries while serving as president of SEIU Local 2015. Butler cast a vote for Clinton in the 2016 presidential election as one of California’s electors.

Butler was chosen by California Governor Jerry Brown to a 12-year term as a University of California regent in 2018. In 2021, she gave her notice as a regent.

Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, kept his promise to appoint a black woman to the position by selecting Butler to take Dianne Feinstein’s place in the U.S. Senate on October 1, 2023. 

Butler was chosen even though she didn’t live in California because she had moved to Maryland in 2021. According to the US Constitution, senators must only be “inhabitants” of the state they represent. 

According to Newsom’s office, Butler would re-register to vote in California before entering office as a senator.
