Church officials have reported that President M. Russell Ballard, the interim president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, passed away on Sunday.

Following a brief hospital stay, he went back to his house and took care of his responsibilities as best he could before dying in the company of his loved ones at about 11:15 p.m., 95 years old. 

Ever since he was summoned on October 6, 1985, he had been a quorum member. His seven children, 43 grandkids, 105 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild survive him. 

His wife, Barbara Bowen Ballard, passed away in 2018, making her the one who died before him.

Melvin Russell Ballard and his wife Geraldine Smith welcomed Ballard in Salt Lake City, Utah. From 1948 to 1950, Ballard was a young man serving as a missionary in England. 

He held the position of counselor in the mission presidency during this time. He got to know his wife while enrolling in University of Utah classes. 

Ballard had a number of positions in the LDS Church during the following years, including two as a bishop. Ballard was called to lead the church’s Canada Toronto Mission in 1974. 

He was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1976 while serving as mission president, and he concluded his three-year tenure as president while a member of the Seventy.

He served as the editor of the church’s magazines, among other roles, as a seventy from the beginning of 1980 until the end of 1984. From 1980 until 1985, he served as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy. 

In addition to serving as the executive director of the church’s missionary department and head of its International Mission, Ballard held other positions as a general authority. 

Ballard was elevated to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 6, 1985, following the passing of apostle Bruce R. McConkie. On October 10, 1985, Ballard was ordained as an apostle. 

Ballard was the grandson of Hyrum M. Smith and Melvin J. Ballard, two apostles. Ballard was descended from Hyrum Smith, the brother of Joseph Smith, the founder of the religion, through Smith.

As an apostle, Ballard’s responsibilities included overseeing the church’s 1997 Pioneer Sesquicentennial commemoration.

Russell M. Nelson became the next president of the church’s First Presidency after Thomas S. Monson passed away in January 2018.
