The Marina Sabatier case, also known as the Marina affair, shook France in August 2009 when the news of the horrific abuse and death of 8-year-old Marina Sabatier came to light.

This judicial and administrative affair exposed the tragic maltreatment suffered by Marina at the hands of her parents, Éric Sabatier and Virginie Darras.

However, instead of providing a loving and nurturing environment, they subjected Marina to years of abuse and maltreatment. The violence inflicted on Marina began early, with her parents subjecting her to various physical and psychological abuse.

They would kick, punch, and lash her with belts and iron bars. Marina was subjected to torture methods such as cold showers, submerging her head underwater in the bathtub, and being forced to consume salt, vinegar, and vomit.

What Happened To Marina Sabatier?

Despite Marina’s suffering and the numerous warning signals raised by concerned individuals who had direct contact with her, her tragic fate was not prevented.

In 2007, teachers at Marina’s school suspected abuse and informed the school doctor, who, after meeting with Éric Sabatier, believed the father’s explanations of a supposed genetic disease.

Marina’s case shows the need for coordination and follow-up between institutions tasked with child protection.

Tragically, despite Marina being urgently hospitalized in April 2009 with serious foot injuries and suspicions of abuse being reported by the hospital to social services, she was returned to her family in May 2009.
