Authorities claim that the St. Charles Parish School System’s administrators learned that a female pupil who was believed to be 17 years old was actually in her mid-20s.
The school system notified the sheriff’s office and began an internal investigation on May 29. On May 25, the academic year concluded.
According to the sheriff, the mother, Serrano-Alvarado, had been in the country for “several years,” and her visa had expired.
Sheriff stated that based on a photograph taken at the time, her daughter Gutierrez-Serrano could “very easily be taken for a young teenager.” Gutierrez-Serrano arrived in the United States in the fall of 2021.
Champagne stated that she “wanted to improve her English and possibly further her education, which I think we can all be sympathetic with.”

St. Charles Parish Public Schools informed the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office that a female student over the legal age limit had been enrolled at Hahnville High School for the 2022–2023 academic year using false documentation.
In addition to modifying policy and procedures as necessary, the school system will improve processes for confirming enrollment documentation’s validity for existing and future pupils.
