Martha Stewart Controversy And Scandal

The businesswoman has been involved in several controversies and scandals throughout her career.

She was found guilty of obstruction of justice and making false statements to investigators regarding insider trading.

Stewart was accused of selling shares of a biotech Company, ImClone, with the help of her friend and broker, Peter Bacanovic.

She was sentenced to five months in prison, five months of home confinement, and a two-year probation period in 2004.

Again, after getting charged a year ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) brought charges in 2005 against Stewart for insider trading in 2001.

The charges were dropped, but the SEC accused Stewart of deceiving investors about the Company’s financial health, which led to a settlement of $5 million.

Again in 2006, she faced criticism for her comments on poor people’s food and lifestyle habits.

In the interview with Barbara Walters, she said that the reason for a cause of a published backlash was that poor people didn’t have the skills to cook and eat well.

Stewart faced criticism for endorsing a weight loss product called Sensa, which was later sued for false advertising.

The businesswoman was not directly involved in the case, but the Company was concerned about her and sued her for false advertising.

How Long Did Martha Stewart Serve in Prison For Insider Trading?

Stewart got found guilty in March 2004 of felony charges related to insider trading, which included conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to investigators.

She got sentenced to serve a five-month term in a federal correctional facility, followed by two years of supervised release, including five months of electronic monitoring.

For the felony charges she faced along with Bacanovic and Waksal, she paid a fine of $30,000.

She did not spend much time in jail; after five months, she was released and has not been in prison since then. 

Stewart was involved in many scandals and was fined for that, but she never served in prison after being in charge of insider trading for five months. 

The businesswoman was later ban from serving as a director, CEO, or any other officer for five months responsible for preparing, auditing, or disclosing the financial results of any Company.

Because of the scandal, she was not allowed to enter the United Kingdom. Her visa was refused to enter the United Kingdom because of her criminal conviction and scandal.
